The Day Skipper Cheat Sheet

Every method, table and mnemonic the two exam papers ask for, in the order you use them at the chart table. Built for revision and for use as a reference while you learn — not a substitute for the almanac in the exam.

Show every step

Write the tidal-height table, the compass ladder, the vector labels. An examiner can award most of a question from correct method with one arithmetic error; a bare wrong number earns nothing.

Reading a position

Latitude first, then longitude, degrees and decimal minutes, with the hemisphere: 50°42.35'N 001°18.60'W. Latitude is read on the side of the chart, longitude on the top and bottom.

Chart datums, in one line each

Compass rose

Outer ring = true. Inner ring = magnetic, with variation and its annual change printed at the centre, e.g. Var 2°45'W 2020 (8'E). Round the variation to the nearest degree for exam work and say which way you applied it.

02 The three norths Both papers

What each one is

TrueGeographic north. What the chart is drawn to, what you plot.
MagneticTrue corrected for variation — where the earth's field points at that place and year.
CompassMagnetic corrected for deviation — what your boat's own iron does to the needle, on that heading.

The ladder

True → Variation → Magnetic → Deviation → Compass

Error west, compass best (compass reads a bigger number than true).
Error east, compass least.

Signs, without thinking

Going down the ladder (T→C): add West, subtract East.
Going up the ladder (C→T): add East, subtract West.

Worked: course 070°T, variation 5°W, deviation 2°E → magnetic 070 + 5 = 075°M → compass 075 − 2 = 073°C.

Deviation, the trap

  • Caused by the boat's own magnetic fields: engine, keel bolts, speakers, a phone left on the bulkhead.
  • It changes with the boat's heading, so it is read off a deviation card against the ship's heading.
  • It is never looked up against the bearing of a lighthouse. A hand-bearing compass taken well away from steelwork is treated as deviation-free.
  • Checked by a transit: compare the compass bearing of two objects in line with the charted (magnetic) bearing.

Wrapping and format

  • Three figures always: 007°, not .
  • Wrap within 000–359: 358 + 5 = 003, 002 − 5 = 357.
  • Suffix always: T (true), M (magnetic), C (compass).
  • Reciprocal = ± 180°. A light bearing 210° from you means you bear 030° from it.

Almanac and chart mix

Almanac and pilot-book bearings of leading lines and sector lights are usually true; buoy and transit bearings quoted in port entries may be magnetic. Read the note. Plot in true, convert once, and write the conversion down.

03 Chartwork: fix, EP and course to steer Half of paper 2

The three plotting symbols

Fixing your position

  1. Pick three objects roughly 60° apart, charted and certainly identified.
  2. Take the quickest-changing bearing last (the one nearest the beam), note the time and log.
  3. Convert each: compass → magnetic → true. Write each line out.
  4. Plot from the object with the reciprocal; label each line with its bearing.
  5. A small cocked hat is normal; take the position at the corner nearest the danger.

Other good fixes: a transit (two objects in line — the most accurate line on any chart, no compass involved), a transit crossed with a bearing, a bearing crossed with a depth contour, a range from a radar or a rising/dipping light.

Running fix

One object only: bearing at time 1, run the course and log distance from any point on that line, transfer the bearing line to the run's end, cross with the second bearing. Mark the result R Fix.

Estimated position — "where am I?"

  1. Start at the last fix. Plot the water track (course steered, corrected to true, plus leeway) and step off the log distance run — that end is the DR.
  2. From the DR, plot the tidal stream for the same period: set and drift, three arrows.
  3. The end of the tide vector is your EP. Triangle, time it.
  4. The line fix→EP is your ground track; measure it for course and distance made good.

Course to steer — "where do I point?"

  1. Draw the ground track you want: a line from your position to the destination. Don't measure it yet.
  2. From your position, plot the tidal stream for one hour (set and drift). Call its end A.
  3. From A, swing the dividers at your boat speed through the water for one hour; where the arc cuts the ground-track line is B.
  4. A→B is the course to steer (water track, two arrows). Measure it: that's your heading in true.
  5. Apply leeway: steer upwind of that by the leeway angle. Then apply variation and deviation down the ladder to get °C.
  6. Your position→B is the ground track: measure it for speed over the ground and the ETA.

Tell them apart in one breath

EP: boat first, tide second. You know what you did, you want the result.
CTS: tide first, boat second. You know the result you want, you need the heading.

Leeway

The wind pushes the hull sideways, so the wake lies to leeward of the heading. To make good a water track, point up into the wind by the leeway angle. Building an EP, the water track lies downwind of the heading you steered. Typical 5° close-hauled in a breeze, 10° or more reefed and pressed; nil dead downwind.

Always leave a safety margin

Work the answer, then subtract your own clearance (commonly 0.5–1.0 m under the keel, plus more in a swell). The exam rewards stating the margin you chose.

Springs and neaps

  • Springs: new and full moon, sun and moon in line. Biggest range, highest HW, lowest LW, fastest streams. About two days after the moon phase.
  • Neaps: first and last quarter. Smallest range, weakest streams.
  • Roughly fortnightly cycle; the almanac prints the spring/neap ranges for each standard port in the curve panel.

Standard port, height at a given time

  1. Find the day's HW and LW times and heights. Correct for BST (+1 h) if the tables are UT and the question is local.
  2. Compute the range = HW − LW, and see where it sits between the printed spring and neap ranges.
  3. On the tidal curve, mark HW height on the top scale and LW height on the bottom scale; join them with a sloping line.
  4. Enter the time scale at HW, count the hours to the time you want, go up to the curve — spring curve solid, neap curve dashed, interpolate for anything between.
  5. Go across to the sloping line, then up or down to the height scale. Read the height of tide.

Time for a given height — the same picture backwards

Enter on the height scale, across to the sloping line, up to the curve, down to the time scale, and add or subtract from HW. Two answers exist each tide (one rising, one falling) — say which you mean.

Rule of twelfths — the quick check

Over a six-hour tide the range comes in as 1/12, 2/12, 3/12, 3/12, 2/12, 1/12 per hour.

Half the range in the middle two hours. Range 6 m → 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 1.5, 1.0, 0.5 m.

Valid only for a roughly sinusoidal tide of about 6 h. Use the curve for the answer and twelfths for the sanity check — and never for the Solent's double HW.

Secondary ports

  1. Work the standard port tide for the day, first.
  2. Take the secondary port's time differences (given for HW at e.g. 0000 and 0600) and interpolate for your actual HW time.
  3. Take the height differences for MHWS / MHWN / MLWN / MLWS and interpolate for your actual HW and LW heights.
  4. Apply both: secondary HW time and height, secondary LW time and height.
  5. Use the standard port's curve with the secondary port's figures unless the almanac prints its own.

05 Tidal streams Feeds every CTS question

Two sources, same answer

Tidal diamond on the chartFind the lettered diamond nearest your track, then the table: rows are hours before and after HW at the named standard port, columns give direction (°T), spring rate, neap rate.
Tidal stream atlasOne page per hour relative to HW. Arrows show direction; figures like 19,34 mean 1.9 kn neaps, 3.4 kn springs — the comma is a decimal point, small number first.

Set and drift

Set = the direction the water flows towards, in °T. Drift = the distance it carries you in the period (rate × time). Wind is named where it comes from; tide is named where it goes to. Do not mix them up.

Interpolating for the day

  1. Work the standard port's HW time for the day and label your hours: HW−3, HW−2, … HW+1.
  2. Work the day's range and compare with the printed spring and neap ranges.
  3. Interpolate the rate between the neap and spring columns in that proportion. Halfway between = the mean of the two.
  4. Multiply by the hours you'll be in that square to get drift.

Using the stream, not fighting it

  • Tidal gate: a headland or narrows where the stream runs hard — plan to arrive with it, not against it.
  • A fair tide of 2 kn on a 5 kn boat is a 40% speed change; over a day it dwarfs any sail trim.
  • Streams turn earlier inshore and run harder off headlands and over shoals.
  • Wind over tide = short, steep, breaking seas. Same strength, far worse ride.
  • In a river or narrow channel, the stream follows the deep water; the eddy at the edge may run the other way.

Course made good vs course steered

Cross-tide on a short hop: the tide that pushes you off in the first hour may push you back in the third. For a short passage, plan the whole-passage vector rather than fighting each hour — it is usually a shorter distance through the water.

Common exam traps

  • Diamond hours are relative to HW at the port named in the table, which may not be your destination.
  • Atlas figures are tenths of a knot, and the neap figure comes first.
  • Springs/neaps interpolation applies to the rate, not the direction.
  • Reversing the set by 180° because it "looks wrong" — set is already the direction of flow.

Red to port entering. "Is there any red port left?" Direction of buoyage is into harbour, up-river, or clockwise round a landmass — shown on the chart by a magenta arrow. Coming out, it all reverses.

IALA B (Americas, Japan, Korea, Philippines) is the mirror image: red to starboard entering — "red right returning".

Reading a cardinal in the dark

Count the flashes like a clock face: 3 at 3 o'clock = East, 6 at 6 o'clock = South (plus the long flash so you can't miscount), 9 at 9 o'clock = West, continuous = North.

The mark names the side of the danger you pass: a north cardinal means pass to the north of it. Safe water lies in the named quadrant.

Reading a full light description

Fl(2) WRG 10s 18m 15/11M

Two flashes every 10 seconds · white, red and green sectors · focal plane 18 m above MHWS · nominal range 15 M white, 11 M the coloured sectors. Sector limits are quoted from seaward — the almanac or chart gives the bearings; white usually marks the safe approach, red and green the danger sides.

Period is the whole cycle, flash and dark, in seconds. Timing a light: start the watch on a flash, count ten cycles, divide. Rising and dipping distance of a light is in the almanac — the moment it appears gives you a range.

Power-driven vessel underway

  • Under 50 m: one masthead light, sidelights, sternlight (a second, higher masthead light is optional).
  • 50 m and over: two masthead lights, the after one higher, plus sidelights and sternlight.
  • Two masthead lights in line tell you the heading: open to the right, she is crossing right to left… read them with the sidelight.
  • Under 12 m: may show one all-round white plus sidelights. Under 7 m and under 7 kn: one all-round white, sidelights if practicable.

Sailing vessel

  • Sidelights + sternlight. No masthead light — that is the giveaway.
  • Optional: two all-round lights at the masthead, red over green ("red over green, sailing machine"), with the sidelights and sternlight still burning.
  • Under 20 m may combine sidelights and sternlight in one tricolour at the masthead — used instead of, never as well as.
  • Motor-sailing = a power-driven vessel: masthead light on, and by day a cone, point down, forward.
  • Under oars, or sail under 7 m: at least a torch or lantern shown in time to prevent collision.

Say them aloud

Red over red — the captain is dead (not under command).
Red, white, red — restricted ahead (RAM).
Green over white — trawling at night.

Towing and pushing

  • Tug: two masthead lights in a vertical line; three if the tow measures more than 200 m from tug stern to tow stern. Sidelights, sternlight, and a yellow towing light above the sternlight.
  • Vessel towed: sidelights and sternlight only — dark between tug and tow, so never cut through.
  • Tow over 200 m: a diamond shape by day on tug and tow.
  • Unable to deviate from her course (tug and tow restricted): she may also show the RAM lights and shapes.

Identify in this order

1. Any status lights (red/white/green all-rounds) — they outrank everything.
2. Masthead light? Yes = power-driven, no = sailing. Two = 50 m or more.
3. Sidelights: which colours, and in what order, gives the aspect.
4. Only then decide who gives way.

08 Rules of the road Quote the rule number

Rule 19 — conduct in restricted visibility

  • Applies to vessels not in sight of one another. The steering and sailing rules of Section II (12–18) do not apply: there is no stand-on vessel.
  • Safe speed; engines ready for immediate manoeuvre.
  • Detecting a vessel by radar alone: avoid altering to port for a vessel forward of the beam (unless overtaking), and avoid altering towards a vessel abeam or abaft the beam.
  • Hearing a fog signal forward of the beam, or unable to avoid close quarters: reduce to minimum steerage way, and if necessary take all way off and navigate with extreme caution.

Deciding in four moves

  1. Is there risk of collision? Take a compass bearing. Steady bearing, closing range → yes.
  2. What is she? Read lights, shapes or aspect. Power, sail, fishing, restricted?
  3. Which rule? Overtaking (13) beats crossing (15) beats the sail rules (12), and Rule 18 sits over all of them.
  4. Give way or stand on? If give-way: alter early, large, to starboard where possible, pass astern, and make it obvious. If stand-on: hold course and speed, keep watching, be ready to act.

Phrases examiners want back

  • "A constant bearing with a decreasing range indicates risk of collision."
  • "Early and substantial, so as to be readily apparent to the other vessel."
  • "Avoid crossing ahead; alter to pass under her stern."
  • "Keep clear until finally past and clear."
  • "Nothing in these rules exonerates any vessel from the consequences of neglect" (Rule 2, the rule of good seamanship).

Sound signals say what you are doing, not what you'd like the other vessel to do. They are a commentary on your own helm, made at the moment you put it over.

One long = I'm a ship, going somewhere. Two long = going nowhere. Long-short-short = I have a problem or a privilege (sail, fishing, restricted, towing) — the same signal for everyone who can't just get out of your way. Add a third short and it's the thing on the end of the rope.

Distress signals you may be asked to list

  • Mayday by VHF voice on Ch 16; DSC alert on Ch 70; EPIRB; SART.
  • Continuous sounding of any fog-signalling apparatus.
  • Red parachute rocket or red hand flare; orange smoke by day.
  • SOS by any means; the spoken word "Mayday".
  • Flag N over C; a square flag with a ball above or below it.
  • Slow, repeated raising and lowering of outstretched arms.
  • Flames on the vessel; a gun fired at one-minute intervals.

Local effects

  • Sea breeze: sunny afternoon, land heats, air rises, cool air draws in from the sea. Onshore, building through the afternoon, dying at dusk; can add 10–15 kn and back or veer the gradient wind.
  • Land breeze: night and early morning, weaker, offshore.
  • Advection fog (sea fog): warm moist air over a cold sea. Common in spring, persists in wind — the fog that matters to sailors.
  • Radiation fog: clear calm night over land, drifts out of river mouths at dawn, burns off with the sun.
  • Wind over tide: steep breaking seas. Wind against a headland or shoal: overfalls and a race.
  • Katabatic wind: cold air pouring down a valley or off high ground at night, gusty, offshore.
  • Wind funnels and accelerates between headlands and along cliffs; expect more than the forecast in a gap.

Flares and what they are for

Man overboard, in order

  1. Shout "man overboard" and detail one person to point and never look away.
  2. Press MOB on the GPS or plotter.
  3. Throw buoyancy: horseshoe, danbuoy, lifesling — immediately, even if you sail back.
  4. Get the crew on deck; start the engine (watch for lines in the water).
  5. Manoeuvre back: a reach away and a reach back, or a crash stop, depending on boat and conditions — the plan you have practised.
  6. Approach slowly from downwind, stop with the casualty at the shrouds, secure them to the boat before anything else.
  7. Recover with a strop, halyard and winch — lifting horizontally where possible after a long immersion.
  8. If not recovered quickly, send a Mayday. Treat for hypothermia and shock.

Kit, checks and fire

Cold shock gasping in the first minute, loss of grip and useful movement within ten, then hypothermia. Buoyancy and a way back aboard matter more than swimming ability.

12 Passage planning, pilotage and electronics The long question

The four stages

AppraisalGather everything: charts, almanac, pilot book, forecast, crew and boat capability.
PlanningWrite the plan: route, waypoints, tidal windows, ETA, bolt-holes, pilotage notes.
ExecutionDepart at the planned time, or re-plan. The plan serves the day, not the other way round.
MonitoringFix regularly, log it, compare with the plan, adjust. Cross-check the plotter against a bearing or a depth.

What a Day Skipper plan must contain

  • Tides: HW and LW times and heights at departure, destination and any gate; stream directions along the route hour by hour; the height of tide over every shallow patch on the way.
  • Weather: the latest forecast and where the next one comes from; wind against tide spots; the limit you'll turn back at.
  • Route: courses and distances leg by leg, with the expected SOG and a running ETA.
  • Hazards: rocks, races, firing ranges, TSS, ferry routes, restricted areas; clearing bearings or contours for each.
  • Pilotage: entry and exit plans at both ends, drawn out, with lights and marks in sequence.
  • Contingency: alternative ports and the conditions under which you'd use them; where you can anchor and wait for the tide.
  • Admin: fuel, water, food, crew fitness and watches, safety briefing, someone ashore told the plan.

Six headings to recite if the question says "what would you consider": crew, boat, tides, weather, navigation, contingency. Then add "and I'd tell someone ashore".

Tidal window, worked in three lines

  1. Least charted depth on the route, minus your draught and safety margin, gives the height of tide you need.
  2. Read the curve for the times that height occurs, rising and falling — that's the window.
  3. Check the stream and the harbour's own restrictions inside that window, then set the departure time by working back from the far end.

Pilotage — navigation without plotting

The pilotage plan on a card

Write it before you get there, big enough to read in the dark and the wet: each mark, its light character, the course to the next, the distance, the expected time, the depth you should see, and the abort point. Then you pilot by eye, not by chart table.

Electronic navigation, and its limits

Waypoints

Never put a waypoint on a buoy or a mark — everyone else's plotter has it there too. Offset to the side you'll pass, check every leg between waypoints for what it crosses, and keep the cross-track error alarm on.

Knots and their one job

BowlineA fixed loop that won't slip or jam — sheets to a sail, a line round a post, round a casualty.
Round turn & two half hitchesTo a ring, rail or post under load; can be untied loaded.
Clove hitchFenders to a guardrail; quick, adjustable, not to be trusted alone under varying load.

Reef knotJoins two ends of the same line round something — reefing ties, sail ties. Not for joining two ropes under load.

Rope

  • Polyester (Terylene): low stretch, UV resistant — sheets and halyards.
  • Nylon (polyamide): strong and stretchy — anchor rodes and mooring warps, where shock absorption helps.
  • Polypropylene: cheap, floats, weakens in sunlight — heaving lines, dinghy painters.
  • Kill chafe: it does more damage than load. Whip or heat-seal every end.

Anchoring

ScopeAt least 4 × the maximum depth of water in all chain, 6 × with rope. Depth means at high water, plus freeboard.
Swinging roomRadius = scope veered + boat length. Check what it sweeps at every state of tide and wind.
HoldingSand and mud good, weed and rock poor, shingle variable. Read the chart's seabed abbreviation.
TypesCQR/plough and Delta: good in sand and mud. Danforth/Fortress: high holding, flat stowage, poor in weed. Bruce/claw: easy setting. Fisherman: rock and weed, heavy.

Letting go, in order

  1. Pick the spot for depth, holding, shelter and swinging room; check the tide's rise and fall.
  2. Approach into the wind or tide, whichever dominates, and stop over the spot.
  3. Lower — don't drop — the anchor until it is on the bottom, then drop back, veering the scope as you go.
  4. Snub it and go astern gently to dig it in.
  5. Take transits or bearings to check she is holding, note the depth, and set an anchor alarm.
  6. Show a ball by day and an all-round white by night.

No masthead light = sailing. Two masthead lights = 50 m or more.
Red over red — captain is dead.
Red, white, red — restricted ahead.

Rules

New Reels Catch Fish So Purchase Some — NUC, RAM, CBD, Fishing, Sailing, Power, Seaplane.
Sail: port gives way to starboard; same tack, windward gives way.
Power head-on: both starboard. Power crossing: other on your starboard, you give way, pass astern.
Overtaker always keeps clear, from 22.5° abaft the beam.
Stand-on: hold course and speed, act if she doesn't.
Fog (Rule 19): nobody stands on; no turn to port for anything forward of the beam; hear a signal ahead → minimum steerage way.
Risk: constant bearing, decreasing range. Action: early, substantial, obvious.

Safety

Mayday order: M I P D A N I O — Mayday, Identity, Position, Danger, Assistance, Number aboard, Info, Over. DSC Ch 70 then voice Ch 16.
Mayday = grave danger · Pan-Pan = urgency · Sécurité = safety.
White flare is not distress.
